Synthesis and properties of aluminum-yttrium-zirconium oxides

Journal Article · · Inorg. Mater. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

The oxides of aluminum and zirconium are widely used as refractories. To improve the reliability of these materials, metal additives are introduced and a special structure is created. The change of specific surface and pycnometric density during the heat treatment of the tiple hydroxides of aluminum, zirconium, and yttrium are shown and the microstructure of a ceramic produced by hot pressing a mixture of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ + ZrO/sub 2/ + Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ is given. It is shown that introduction of 5-10 wt.% Mo and MoSi/sub 2/ additive increases the room-temperature strength of the material (ceramic). With increase of temperature, the degree of weakening is higher, and this is more pronounced above 800-1000 C.
