Reliable neutron dosimetry requires knowledge of the neutron spectrum. The authors discuss the problem of analyzing data from a multisphere neutron spectrometer to infer the energy spectrum of the incident neutrons and describe the code MAXED, a computer program developed to apply the maximum entropy principle to this problem. The determination of dosimetric quantities that are strongly dependent on the neutron energy (such as effective dose) requires knowledge of the neutron spectrum. In the case of neutrons produced in accelerators and reactors, the energy range can extend from a fraction of an eV to tens of MeV or more. The multisphere neutron spectrometer is the only spectrometer that covers this entire energy range and is, therefore, well suited for radiation protection measurements of this kind.
