Comparison of the interacting-boson model and the quasiparticle-phonon model of the nucleus
The basic ideas of the quasiparticle-phonon model of the nucleus and the interacting-boson model are compared. In order to obtain a unified description of collective states with positive and negative parity it is necessary to develop a variant of the interacting-boson model with s, p, d, f, and g bosons. It is shown that there are fundamental differences in the basic ideas of the models and in their description of the states of even-even deformed nuclei with K/sup ..pi..//sub n/ = 0/sup -//sub 2/, 0/sup +- //sub 3/, 0/sup +- //sub 4/, 1/sup +- //sub 2/, 2/sup +- //sub 2/, 2/sup +- //sub 3/, 2/sup +- //sub 4/, 3/sup +- //sub 2/, 3/sup +- //sub 3/, 4/sup +//sub 1/, and 4/sup +//sub 2/. A critique is given of the description of giant resonances in the interacting-boson model. New, more accurate experimental data on the structure of the states of deformed nuclei with excitation energies 1.5--2.5 MeV are needed.
