Plasma-wave instrument on the AMPTE/IRM (active magnetospheric particle-tracing explorers/ion release module) spacecraft. Final report for 1 December 1981-31 August 1987

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6967479
The primary purposes of the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracing Explorers (AMPTE) program were (1) to carry out the release and monitoring of lithium and barium ions in the solar wind and the distant magnetosphere in order to study the transport of energization of magnetospheric particles, and to investigate the instabilities and wave-particle interactions associated with the releases and subsequent evolution of the injected clouds, and (2) to carry out large releases of barium in the solar wind with the objective of producing artificial comets and studying the interaction of the injected plasma clouds with the solar wind.
