The trend toward greater competition and private sector involvement in the electric utility sector is not limited to the U.S. Seeking to tap the efficiency gains of private enterprise and stimulate investment of private capital, developed and developing countries alike are turning toward private power generation and the privatization of government-run electric utilities. The private power developments covered here include efforts to restructure the utility system: encourage independently generated electricity; and privatize government-owned utilities. Discussion covers several countries.
