Title: Getting ready for the open market

The electric power industry in the United States is moving towards a deregulated open market. The different regions of the country are passing through different phases of this transformation. Eventually, there would be integrated operation of transmission grid in each region, connecting generation facilities, electric utilities, bulk power supply customers and distribution companies; thus, resolving problems associated with multiple ownership of transmission lines. In the open market scenario, every segment of electric industry would become wide open to all market participants for competition. The increased competition would push electricity prices down and even out price discrepancies around the country. The customers will have the option to choose their energy provider; like in telephone industry. This paper presents a detailed account of measures; the power companies can adopt to successfully face the challenges of the upcoming open market. The recommended measures can be summed up in the following categories: (1) Marketing strategies, (2) Business optimization, (3) Management of generation capacity, and (4) Transmission security. The issues and challenges facing the open market are also identified. The market participants can benefit from this paper in their preparation for the competitive marketplace.
