Stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) produces service failures in gas transmission pipe lines by slow, environmentally-induced cracking. The cracking is caused by the combined and synergistic interaction of the service stress state, corrosive reactions and a susceptible material. Although SCC causes are complex, laboratory and field studies have lead to an understanding of the causes and their relationships. El Paso natural Gas Co. (EPNG) has developed a model for predicting SCC. The model, known as SCCRAM (Stress-Corrosion Cracking Risk Assessment Matrix), establishes primary SCC parameters in a user friendly matrix and allows operators to evaluate the susceptibility of any pipe line to this form of structural degradation. SCCRAM also recommends a course of action if the perceived potential of cracking is justified.
