Saskatchewan: The evolution and contribution of its Uranium industry

In November 1992, the National Democratic Party (NDP) of Saskatchewan relaxed its political position calling for the phaseout of existing uranium operations and a moratorium on all new development in the region. The deciding factor for most of the NDP delegates centered on the jobs brought to the provincial economy by uranium mining, although the vote was also viewed as a softening of the government's anti-nuclear position. Since the discovery of the world's richest known uranium ore bodies in Saskatchewan nearly two decades ago, the province has become a leading world uranium producer; however, the ever-changing face of northern Saskatchewan from a society once supported by hunting, fishing, and trapping, to a global uranium resource has not been without a price. The people and government alike have struggled to define a role in which these facets of their economy can coexist.
