The authors investigate retarded hydrogen failure of a zirconium alloy with 2.5% niobium, which is used for the production of operating channel tubes. The crack growth during tests of the specimens was observed by the acoustic emission method in cooling of the specimens. From the results of measurements of crack length directly on the surface of the specimen and also from the data of investigations of the fracture and determination of the number of acoustic emission pulses per cycle the relationships of the crack length on the surface and in the core of the specimen to the number of thermal cycles were constructed.
