In situ observation of fracture process of a TiAl alloy with fully lamellar microstructure
- Shanghai Univ. (China). Inst. of Metallurgy and Materials
The objective of this paper is to present the results of an in situ observation of crack growth and the fracture process in a TiAl alloy with the fully lamellar microstructure. The fracture process of a TiAl alloy with a fully lamellar microstructure allows the formation of bridging and shear ligaments resulting in a relatively high toughness. The formation of the ligaments, which experience extensive deformation between the crack faces as the crack extends, appears to be attributable to the ability of the lamellae to locally deform. However, the plastic incompatibility strains are still obvious. Further research is needed to understand the mechanism on the concurrent plastic incompatibility and local ductility in the fully lamellar microstructure.
