Evaluation of R and D needs based on cogeneration system operational experience. Final report, January 1990-September 1992

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6962604
The operational reliability (OR) of 122 natural gas-fueled cogeneration systems was evaluated. The systems ranged in size from small packaged reciprocating systems of less than 100 kW to utility-scale gas turbine systems of greater than 100 MW. Data were collected during visits to the project sites and included copies of daily operations and maintenance (O M) logs. These data sources were essential to the accuracy and verifiability of OR performance statistics. Statistical data included availability, forced outage rate, and mean time between forced outages. Data analyzed included scheduled and unscheduled outage events, written descriptions of the failure cause, downtime durations, equipment operating hours, and electrical and thermal generation statistics. More than 9,500 maintenance event descriptions are described in a special OR performance analysis data base developed for the project. As a result of this work, a practical framework for collecting and organizing plant O M data is presented. Illustrative methods are included that demonstrate how reliability improvement opportunities can be identified and analyzed.
