Luminescence and diffuse reflection spectroscopic methods established the presence of incompletely coordinated Ce/sup 3 +/ ions on the surface of reduced Ce/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and CePd/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts capable of stabilizing H/sub 2/O, CO/sub 2/, and CO molecules in their coordination sphere. An interaction of cerium and palladium affecting their oxidation-reduction properties was detected in the Ce-Pd/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts. Palladium additives significantly reduce the temperature for the onset of the reduction of Ce/sup 4 +/ to Ce/sup 3 +/ ions by CO relative to Ce/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/. The rate of reduction of Pd/sup 2 +/ ions is reduced in the presence of cerium.
