Recent media attention directed towards contamination problems and wildlife deformities at Kesterson Reservoir in the western San Joaquin Valley has focused interest on the possible toxic effects of selenium in food and water. This article examines basic background information on the occurrence, properties, uses, and biogeochemistry of selenium, and looks briefly at the larger picture of salinity buildup in irrigated and arid lands of the west.
