Titration method improves water measurement

Water content in petroleum products and bituminous materials can be determined by a new method using a Coulometric Karl Fischer titrator. The method offers reduced analysis time and operator bias, and increased detection sensitivity and improved precision compared to the existing method jointly adopted as a standard by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the Americal Petroleum Institute (API), and the Institute of Petroleum (IP). Measurement is accurate, precise, rapid, and flexible when the titrator is used in conjunction with a liquid-evaporation accessory and pyridine-free Karl Fischer reagents. To validate the capability of the new method, a study was conducted to compare the existing standard method with the titration method. The study was conducted in a commercial, production-oriented laboratory, using a variety of recently obtained petroleum samples. Water content was determined for each sample by both methods, and the results were compared and statistically evaluated for correlation to the standard method, precision, detection sensitivity, and analysis time.
