Compressors simultaneously approach surge
A control algorithm has been developed to allow control of parallel gas compressors so that they unload simultaneously to their surge control limits. Equations describing the algorithm, the S Criteria, are given along with a description of how the control system operates. A description and the operating characteristics of the concept, used on an offshore gas compression station, are discussed. The first installment of this two-part article discussed the advantages of simulation control to the surge limit, and compared the concept with other common control methods. There are many possible algorithms for simultaneous approach to the surge control lines of centrifugal compressors. Obviously, each algorithm depends on measuring the distance from the operating point to the surge control line. Because compressors may differ in capacity and characteristics, the absolute distance of the operating point from the surge control line is not useful. The authors recommend using a dimensionless number expressing the relative distance from the surge control line. This measurement technique will now be incorporated into a control algorithm. The algorithm that will be described here is called the ''S'' Criteria.'' It is one possible method of improved control. The S Criteria was developed and patented by one of the authors.
