The status of the standard neutron cross sections are reviewed from the view point of author`s opinion that improved nuclear data are needed. The leverage on the nuclear data system produced by improved accuracies in the standards are explored. These standards, which the H(n,p), {sup 3}He(n,p), {sup 6}Li(n,{alpha}), {sup 10}B(n,{alpha}), C(n,n), Au(n,{gamma}), and {sup 235}U(n,f) cross sections, have been specified in the neutron energy region below 20 MeV. However there is a growing need to extend the standards to higher neutron energies. Regions of significant uncertainties are examined. The influence of recent neutron cross section standards measurements, particularly the angular distribution of neutron scattering from hydrogen, the neutron reactions with {sup 10}B, and the {sup 235}U(n,f) reaction, are discussed. New standards measurements relevant to satisfying critical nuclear data needs are discussed.
