The authors demonstrate the application of spontaneous Raman scattering to the determination of the vibrational temperature of molecular nitrogen in a glow discharge as a method for measuring the vibrational efficiency of gas discharge tubes employed in rapid-flow carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide lasers under discharge pumping conditions. A relatively low power laser with CW or quasi-CW operation for probing the vibrational spectra was used together with a recording system with time integration of the scattered radiation signal.
