R and R{sub {tau}} ratios at the five-loop level of perturbative QCD

The authors study perturbative QCD at the five-loop level. In particular they consider R = {sigma}{sub tot}(e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} {yields} hadrons)/{sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}) and R{sub {tau}} = {Gamma}({tau} {yields} {nu} + hadrons)/{Gamma}({tau} {yields} e{nu}{bar {nu}}). They use their method to estimate the five-loop coefficients. As a result, they obtain {alpha}{sub s}(M{sub Z}) = 0.1186(11) and {alpha}{sub s}(34 GeV) = 0.1396(16), which are accurate at the 1% level. They also find R = 3.8350(18), which is consistent with R{sub {tau}} and is accurate to 0.05%.
