The High Sulfur Test Center (HSTC) is a research facility dedicated to aiding the utility industry in developing more cost effective and environmentally sound emission control technologies for use with high-sulfur coals. With the debate surrounding the sources of, and methods for reducing acid rain, the start-up of the HSTC is timely. It is anticipated that near-term research conducted at this facility will lead to reduced operating costs and improved reliability for flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems now in operation. In addition, future work at the facility will help identify more cost effective FGD system design options for both new and retrofit applications. This work could save the utility industry hundreds of millions of dollars if future legislation mandates FGD retrofit.
