Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), which consists of exhaled mainstream smoke and sidestream smoke, has a mass median diameter in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 {mu}m. There are many different components of ETS. Most of these components cannot be used as a marker for ETS because they are not specific for tobacco smoke. Nicotine, however, is specific to tobacco smoke and is present in high concentrations. The purpose of this study was to gather information on particle concentration in a variety of indoor locations. The performance of direct reading instruments is compared with integrated monitoring methods. Nicotine was collected as a marker for ETS and the relationship between particulate concentration and vapor phase nicotine is examined.
