Nonlinear optics and quantum electronics

Book ·
OSTI ID:6957629

The fundamental principles and applications of nonlinear optical phenomena are discussed in a textbook for advanced students. Classical or semiclassical theory is employed as much as possible, but full quantum descriptions are used when required, and the basic concepts and formulas of quantum physics are compiled in an appendix. Topics examined include the classical description of EM fields, the quantized free radiation field, interaction between radiation and matter, statistical and coherence properties of the radiation field on their measurement, nonstationary processes, nonlinear one-photon processes in lasers, nonlinearities and quantum phenomena in transient one-photon processes, and multiphoton absorption and emission. Consideration is given to the generation of harmonics and sum and difference frequencies, parametric amplification and oscillation, stimulated Raman scattering, optical bistability, and nonlinear optical phase conjugation. 464 references.
