The USSR is the second largest producer and consumer of energy. Its vast landmass and adjacent continental shelves contain enormous energy resources. Only in recent years, however, has exploration and development spanned the entire country. Because of its energy exports and technology imports, Soviet energy has become a strategic issue that transcends international boundaries. This atlas' maps, text, photographs, and graphics provide a knowledgeable appreciation of the major Soviet energy resources - oil, gas, coal, and primary electricity - as well as new and alternative energy sources.
