A dry blend thickening agent for aqueous systems is described. The composition consists essentially of a mixture of a polygalactomannan gum and a copolymer containing carboxylate groups. The composition contributes high viscosity to an aqueous solution due to a synergistic viscosity effect derived from the interaction of the polygalactomannan and copolymer components. The copolymer is made from ..cap alpha.., ..beta..-olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride and a comonomer selected from ..cap alpha..-olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons and alkyl vinyl ethers. The aqueous systems can have a pH in the range 4 to 13. 32 claims.
