Inductive mining prospecting. Part 1: Theory

Book ·
OSTI ID:6955890
In this description of the theory of the inductive technique for mineral exploration, the authors explain mathematical results in physical terms which can be applied directly to the problem of inductive mineral prospecting. The book begins with a discussion of the meaning of the various physical laws which, when combined, lead to Maxwell's equations for the behavior of electromagnetic fields. Emphasis is placed on the fact that certain induction currents in the earth give rise only to secondary magnetic fields, while others give rise both to secondary magnetic fields and to charges. The rest of the book is devoted to analytical solutions of Maxwell's equations for shapes of bodies that permit precise solutions. These include spheres, spheroids, cylinders and discs. The results are compared to show what parts of the field behavior are independent of the shape of the body, so that generalizations about interpretation of inductive mineral surveys can be drawn. Both time-domain and frequency-domain behavior is examined, and the results show clearly the reason why time-domain methods are so much more effective than frequency-domain methods.
