A starting system for an RF excited gas laser having a resonant frequency is described comprising: power source means for generating an RF laser pumping signal having a frequency displaced from the resonant frequency, means for applying the pumping signal to a laser to be started, and means for momentarily shifting the frequency of the pumping signal toward the resonant frequency, thereby increasing the voltage applied to the laser and igniting discharge thereof.
