For designing compact shell-and-tube heat exchangers, it is necessary to estimate heat-transfer coefficients for a yawed cylinder. A wind-tunnel experimental study was carried out to measure the average heat-transfer coefficient for yawed circular cylinders, 5, 8, and 20 mm in diameter, respectively. The effect of cylinder yaw on the heat-transfer characteristics was examined for yaw angles of 16--90 degrees at Reynolds numbers from 2[center dot]10[sup 2] to 5[center dot]10[sup 4]. Flow-visualization experiments were also conducted to observed the flow patterns around the cylinders. From these results, experimental formulas were derived to estimate the heat transfer from a yawed circular cylinder.
