Production of hadrons by a longitudinal photon (small q/sup 2/)

It is argued that the longitudinal photon plays an important role in hadron production, contrary to the opinion contained in the generalized vector-dominance model. It is shown that the simplest model of vector dominance and the assumption that the scattering cross sections are independent of the helicity of the vector meson provide a good description of the experimental data on the reaction e+p..-->..e+X in the Regge region of the process ..gamma..*p..--> gamma..*p. It is shown also that the experimental data on lepton production of vector mesons for small virtuality of the photon (Vertical Barq/sup 2/Vertical Bar< or =0.6--1.0 GeV/sup 2//c/sup 2/) are compatible with an appreciable contribution from the longitudinal photon (no dependence of the scattering cross sections on the helicity of the vector meson). The role of the longitudinally polarized photon in the reaction ..gamma..*..gamma -->..hadrons is discussed.
