A niobium phosphate bronze closely related to the ITB tungsten bronzes: K sub 7 Nb sub 14+x P sub 9-x O sub 60 (x = 0. 13)

Journal Article · · Journal of Solid State Chemistry; (USA)
A new niobium phosphate bronze K{sub 7}Nb{sub 14+x}P{sub 9-x}O{sub 60} has been isolated and its structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction from a single crystal. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pmma, with a = 36.883(3) {angstrom}, b = 10.603(1) {angstrom} and c = 6.4526(5) {angstrom}. The mixed framework of this bronze is closely related to the intergrowth tungsten bronzes (ITB): it consists of (Nb{sub 3}P{sub 2}O{sub 13}){sub {infinity}} layers deduced from the ITB (Mo{sub 5}O{sub 15}){sub {infinity}} layers observed in Sb{sub 2}Mo{sub 10}O{sub 31} by replacing two octahedra out of five by PO{sub 4} tetrahedra. Four such layers are stacked along a, sharing the corners of their polyhedra, forming (Nb{sub 12}P{sub 8}O{sub 52}){sub {infinity}} slabs connected through (NbP{sub 2}O{sub 8}){sub {infinity}} chains related to the perovskite and to the hexagonal tunnels. This host lattice determinates five types of tunnels of the brownmillerite and of the hexagonal tungsten bronzes, where K{sup +} ions are located.
