Mapping onto a hypersphere of the allowed region of values of the kinematical variables for a three-particle reaction enables us to perform a generalized partial-wave analysis of the reaction. Simple variables )Omega-bar) that realize this mapping for relativistic kinematics are given. These variables have simple permutation properties which facilitate treatment of identical particles. Our mapping conserves the phase-space volume, so that the limit of a constant reaction amplitude corresponds to a uniform distribution inside the hypersphere. A distribution in the Dalitz plot for arbitrary particle masses is transformed into a distribution in a circle with constant phase-space density and thus can be expanded in the polynomials orthogonal in the circle. General properties of such mappings are studied, and it is shown that the well known relation between the maximum effective generalized angular momentum and the generalized impact parameter of the three-particle reaction can, under certain conditions, be extended to the relativistic case. This relation allows one to obtain qualitative information about the system.
