Power-grid-connected cogeneration demonstration plant at Clark University

Journal Article · · Energy Eng.; (United States)

The cogeneration plant at Clark University, sponsored by DOE as part of five model projects, is described. The plant is interconnected with the utility grid and will sell its surplus power, a key factor in cost savings. The power system, a 1807 kW electric generator fired by a 2500 hp natural-gas fired diesel engine is described. It is pointed out that 35% of the energy will be converted directly to electricity and 34% will be recaptured from the engine's exhaust and cooling jacket to be used for heating, air conditioning and hot water. Total efficiency is cited at about 70%, compared to 35% at plants which do not use the heat generated. The design and operation of the plant and cogenerating aspects are discussed as well as financing and environmental factors. Seven major parameters involved in the design of the system are given. Cost savings and future energy projections at the University are discussed. (MJJ)
