Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are two series of tricyclic, aromatic compounds that exhibit similar physical, chemical, and biological properties. These compounds, the subject of much concern in recent years, have been involved in a number of incidents which are described. For example, in February, 1981, a fire in the State Office Building in Binghamton, New York, caused a transformer to rupture, releasing soot into the building. The dielectric fluid in the transformer consisted of a mixture of PCBs and chlorinated benzenes. The soot was found to be highly contaminated with PCDFs. PCDDs and PCDFs have been detected in fly ash from municipal incinerators, heating facilities, and thermal power plants. With the analytical standards now available, it has recently been shown that isomer-specific analyses can be performed for all toxic PCDD and PCDF isomers. However, very few laboratories now have either the access to or the experience to work with the standards. With the aid of the sensitive and selective analytical technique described background levels of tetrachloro-octachloro PCDDs and PCDFs have been found in ecological samples as well as in human adipose tissue in the US, Canada, and Scandinavia. 89 references.
