Behavior of Pt crystallites on carbon and alumina suported catalyst

The behavior of Pt crystallites on carbon and alumina supported catalyst was studied by preparing two model catalysts by evaporating platinum on flat thin films of carbon and on alumina and by preparing an industrial catalyst by impregnation. Platinum crystallite migration followed by coalescence was the main catalyst sintering mechanism. Fast sintering of the industrial catalyst occurred in oxygen at high temperature and was probably caused by decomposition of the chloroplatinum complex which weakens the interaction between the platinum crystallite and the alumina lattice, thus favoring crystallite migration and sintering. Rapid sintering during reduction was attributed to formation of metallic platinum, which does not wet the support, and was aided by formation of by-product water.
