The magneto-optical write and overwrite process on Tb{sub 24}Fe{sub 65}Co{sub 11} films with a fixed bias magnetic field was investigated using a static recording system. It was found that with increasing the write laser pulse energy the recorded domain size first increases, then decreases, and finally increases again for films thicker than 100 nm. At certain conditions domains written by irradiation with a light pulse can be annihilated by application of a light pulse with higher energy. Based on this observation a new mode of direct overwrite with fixed bias magnetic field is proposed in which domains are written with a light pulse, and erased with a pulse of larger energy.
