Nonlinear magnetohydrodynamics: Progress report for period January 1, 1987--June 30, 1988

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6949698
We have analyzed the results of a variety of 3D numerical simulations of toroidal Z pinches in which their relaxation to an MHD state which is force-free, but not minimum-energy, was followed. Ananalytical calculation, based upon the principle of minimum energy dissipation rate, seems to account for many of the observed features. Tokamak temperature sawteeth about helical current channels have been observed in 3D Strauss equations computations. An analytical theory of MHD turbulent density fluctuations has been presented and confirmed numerically. The report is structured as follows. The activity of the last two years is summarized. Abstrcts of papers recently published and/or submitted are collected.
