Title: Na/sub x/P/sub 4/W/sub 14/O/sub 50/: the sodium m = 7 member of the monophosphate tungsten bronze series A/sub x/(PO/sub 2/)/sub 4/(WO/sub 3/)/sub 2m/

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem.; (United States)

The structure of Na/sub 1.7/P/sub 4/W/sub 14/O/sub 50/ was established by single crystal X-ray analysis. The compound is the m = 7 member of the family of monophosphate tungsten bronzes with hexagonal tunnels, Na/sub x/(PO/sub 2/)/sub 4/ (WO/sub 3/)/sub 2m/, characterized by ReO/sub 3/-type slabs of various widths connected through PO/sub 4/ tetrahedra. In order to compare with other members of the MPTB/sub h/ family, a cell symmetry Al has been chosen with a = 6.575(2), b = 5.304(1), c = 27.076(3) A, ..cap alpha.. = 89.62(1), ..beta.. = 96.17(1), and ..gamma.. = 90.26(1)/sup 0/. The refinement has led to R = 0.040 and R/sub w/ = 0.036 for 6634 reflections with sigma(I)/I less than or equal to 0.333. A comparative study is carried out concerning the behavior of the alkaline ions in that sort of framework and especially their coordination state in the O/sub 18/ cages.
