The conditions for stable mode-locked oscillation of the TEA CO/sub 2/ gas laser were clarified. The mode-locked multiline oscillation characteristics were studied using a NaCl etalon plate. Under optimum operating conditions, 4 simultaneous oscillations at 10.4 ..mu..m were obtained. The multiline oscillation characteristics for both mode-locked and Q-switched cases were found to be explained well using the transmission characteristics of the etalon plate. The mode-locked pulse waveforms were observed via a fast-response measuring system. The mode-locked oscillation of < 1 ns pulses at 1 atm was realized. Under optimum conditions, pulses of < 1 ns were obtained. The mode-locked multiline oscillator proposed was effective in generating high-power short-pulse laser light.
