B/sub theta/-lens diode for HERMES III

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6945311

Two promising options for a diode configuration that could give the radiation dose uniformity required for HERMES III have been identified. The first option employs an indented anode to passively control the beam at the converter. Simulations indicate that the desired uniformity can be achieved, but only with a current loss of 10% to 50%. This paper discusses a second option that avoids the current loss by employing both a gas cell and an external current-carrying conical converter to generate a B/sub theta/ field to control the beam. The ''B/sub theta/ lens'' concept has the additional advantage that: (1) the radiation pattern can be controlled by varying the external current; (2) the lens prevents low energy electrons associated with the leading and trailing edge of the voltage pulse from reaching the converter thus helping to sharpen the risetime of the radiation pulse; and (3) the lens acts as an energy spectrometer providing diagnostic information. Simulations of a prototype diode being fielded on the 3 MV 16 ..cap omega.. helia accelerator will be discussed.
