A large unexplored area of the ice covered Weddell Sea was studied by US and Russian scientists during a 4 month period starting February 1992. A large cyclonic circulation cell within the western Weddell Sea is a key component of the global climate system. Included in the study were observations on formation and movement of sea ice, ocean currents beneath the ice, the atmosphere above the ice, and marine plants and animals. This short overview discusses significant findings and describes the expedition and the ice station conditions.
