Nine major US corporations announced the formation of The Industry Cooperative for Ozone Layer Protection to work with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in eliminating ozone-destroying chlorofluorocarbons used in their worldwide operations. The nine firms, AT and T, Boeing, DEC, Ford, General Electric, Honeywell, Motorola, Northern Telecom and Texas Instruments announced their commitment on October 10 at an international conference on CFC and halon substitutes. EPA will cooperative with the new cooperative via a formal Memorandum of Understanding. Members of the new Cooperative will join forces to: encourage prompt adoption of environmentally acceptable chemical and technological alternatives to CFC solvents; share information on new alternatives with industry worldwide; and work with their overseas operations, suppliers, and customers to encourage adoption of ozone-safe technology by small companies in developing countries.
