Preliminary evaluation of the characteristics of nuclear wastes relevant to geologic isolation in basalt
The physical and chemical characteristics of radioactive waste which have bearing upon the concept of geologic storage in basalt are reviewed and discussed. Each class of waste form (spent unreprocessed fuel, calcine, glass, and supercalcine) has its own unique characteristics which may or may not affect the concept of final storage of radioactive waste in basalt. These characteristics form the basis for scientific evaluation of the relative merits of each of the waste/basalt pairs.
