Journal Article · · Environ. Prof.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6940408
State governments have recently increased their involvement in environmental review and decision-making affecting the licensing of nuclear power plants. The diversity of siting and permitting laws, and the varied administrative policies and procedures of various states are potential sources of inefficiency in federal-state cooperation. Environmental issues in licensing, and the related roles of NRC, state agencies, and the utility application are reviewed. Presented are several NRC initiatives to improve licensing cooperation, including: special programs to involve state officials in NRC workshops; formal agreements with states regarding licensing procedures; studies on safety and environmental review methdologies of possible interest to states; and improved coordination among various federal and state agencies.
