Residential energy demand models: current status and future improvements

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6938940
Two models that EIA currently uses to analyze energy use by the residential sector are described. One model, developed at ORNL and termed the ORNL model, is used to forecast energy use by fuel type for various end-uses on a yearly basis. The second is the MATH/CHRDS which is used to analyze variations in energy expenditures by households of various socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. It was developed by Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. Also discussed is a proposal for a new model. In the new model, the essential features of the ORNL and MATH/CHRDS model are retained and integrated into a framework that is more flexible than either model. The important determinants of energy use by households are reviewed.
