Phosphorus solubility in sludge-amended calcareous soils

Sludge additions to calcareous soils in New Mexico increased water soluble and NaHCO/sub 3/-extractable P as well as plant uptake of P, whereas inorganic fertilizer P has often been ineffectual. This paper describes attempts to explain sludge effects in terms of increased solubility of secondary Ca-P solid phases (e.g., tricalcium and octacalcium phosphate) in amended calcareous soils. Both greenhouse and field data, representing several croppings of amended soils were examined. Ancillary effects, primarily slight pH reductions, associated with sludge additions to the soils were apparently responsible for increased P solubility in amended soils.
