The Cochin Pipeline system extending 1870 mi from Fort Saskatchewan in Alberta to Windsor, Can., enters the U.S. at the Saskatchewan-North Dakota border and has 1085 mi of 12 in. line in the U.S. operated by Dome Pipeline Corp. with six U.S. propane terminals as well as interconnections with five U.S. pipeline systems. Construction of the U.S. portion of the system in 12 sections by nine contractors got started in 1977 and is being finished in 1978. Some of the pipe had been purchased four years earlier, and this pipe required special cleaning procedures before being covered with Polyken Tape and primer. Depth of burial varied with local requirements. At road crossings, concrete slabs were placed over the carrier pipe in the bottom of the road borrow ditch as protection from future excavating operations. The general plan of the over-all Cochin system is described, including pump stations, control of product movements, pressure control, operating control, and measurement for custody transfer.
