Hydrogenating cyclopropane (CP) over ruthenium on NaY zeolite at 90/sup 0/C gave products containing 90-93Vertical Bar3< propane and 7-10Vertical Bar3< ethane. Conversion in four hours was approx. 1Vertical Bar3<, compared with 1.6Vertical Bar3< with a Ru/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts, which, however, gave a product containing only 67Vertical Bar3< propane. The zeolite catalysts were made by impregnation of the zeolite with Ru/sub 3/(CO)/sub 12/ vapor in vacuum at 80/sup 0/C followed by reduction in hydrogen at 90/sup 0/C for 19 hr, either directly (A) or after prolonged exposure to oxygen (B). The specific activity of B (0.56Vertical Bar3< Ru) was about 2.5 times higher than that of A (0.8Vertical Bar3< Ru) or of Ru/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ (1.04Vertical Bar3< Ru). A also showed excellent stability. At 136/sup 0/C, CP conversion over A increased to 65Vertical Bar3<, but the product was 38Vertical Bar3< propane, 17Vertical Bar3< ethane, and 45Vertical Bar3< methane and the catalyst stability deteriorated. In hydrogenation of 1-butene, the zeolite catalyst was active at as low as 25/sup 0/C, with 4Vertical Bar3< 1-butene conversion to 63Vertical Bar3< trans- and 29Vertical Bar3< cis-2-butene and 8Vertical Bar3< butane. The conversion increased to 52Vertical Bar3< at 90/sup 0/C. Ru/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ was inactive at 25/sup 0/C and converted 99Vertical Bar3< of 1-butene, mainly to butane, at 90/sup 0/C.
