The many advantages of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) MS include high mass analysis, high resolution and mass accuracy, fast scan times, and positive/negative-ion capability. The pulsed detection makes FT-ICR compatible with pulsed ionization techniques, such as laser desorption. Although these features are available to some extent on other types of mass analyzers, no other single analyzer type combines them in one instrument. The purpose of this book is to describe in detail some of the applications to which FT-ICR MS has been applied. In doing this, the authors hope to emphasize ways in which FT-ICR provides superior information to that of other types of mass spectrometers and where it may be less informative than other mass spectrometers. It is hoped that this will allow the analytical chemist to assess the utility of FT-ICR versus other MS methods for a particular application under consideration or aid in justifying the acquisition of such an instrument.
