Meridian Oil finds success with horizontal wells

Journal Article · · Petroleum Engineer International; (USA)
OSTI ID:6934637
This article discusses how Meridian Oil is proving that a U.S.-based independent can make horizontal drilling and production a viable alternative for economically producing hard-to-recover reserves. The company has 43 horizontal wells drilled in North Dakota, Montana, South Dakota, Alabama, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. Meridian's success is attributed to several factors. First, from a technology standpoint, Meridian has had a 100% success rate in mechanically drilling its horizontal wells. Second, Meridan's managerial approach has allowed decisions about the drilling and completion program to be made quickly and, in many cases, right at the well site. This combination has allowed drilling costs to drop dramatically since the company's initial horizontal well.
