A nuclear power plant must be operated so that the peak linear heat rate of the fuel and the DNBR thermal margin are maintained within limits justified by the safety analysis. To assist the operator in achieving this objective, continuous indications of margins to these operating limits should be provided from a monitoring system. Also, automatic protection must be provided, capable of initiating a reactor trip should design limits on peak linear heat rate and thermal margin parameters be approached. This paper presents a discussion, from a functional viewpoint, of the on-line digital-computer-based systems introduced by Combustion Engineering to perform the monitoring and protective functions for System 80 nuclear steam supply systems and its other high power density NSSS's. Comparisons with earlier techniques generally used in the US are included.
