A surfactant waterflooding process is described for producing oil from a subterranean formation penetrated by an injection well and a production well. An aqueous solution of a copolymer formed of hydrophobic olefinic segments and cationic aromatic hydrophilic segments is injected into and driven through the formation in the production of oil. The copolymer is formed of hydrogenated polybutadiene segments and polystyrene segments chemically modified to strong electrolytes with cationic sites fixed onto the polymer backbone. 6 claims.
