The aim of this investigation was to study the effect of a single extracorporeal irradiation of blood (ECIB) on the cellular and biochemical composition of the blood and on activity of the factors of nonspecific immunity. Experiments were carried out on 16 mongrel dogs. A bypass tube used in the experiments was placed in a ''Perenos'' beta-apparatus, equipped with two IRUS-1 sources based on /sup 90/Sr and /sup 90/Y. The blood was irradiated for 3 h. Hematologic parameters changed in various ways as shown after ECIB. Also after ECIB, significant changes were found in the activity of several factors of natural immunity also shown here. An increase in activity of some factors of nonspecific immunoreactivity and stimulation of repair processes indicate that the ECIB method is a promising one for stimulating nonspecific defensive mechanisms in the body.
